The idea of taking a big ship and convert it into a floating city was around since Jules Verne made a voyage on Great Eastern and wrote a book about it. (| jules verne • a floating city | seasteading | nautilusmaker® |)

The reason it was not implemented beyond cruise ships is the cost structure.

A ship hull lasts some 15 years - then it comes to the end of its service life and needs a mayor fatigue crack repair to keep going.

In a typical 15 year repair you need to weld some 12 tons of welding electrodes into the structure to make it fit for navegation another 5 years…

Then it is gone to the point of “scrap metal” as only possible use for the structure.

A welding seam of 1m can easyly cost you USD 5.000 when done to ABS specifications.

You make the math…how this works for what is in essence a “floating condo” on a condo budget…

A cruise ship runs on a budget base of USD 120 per passenger per day. That is a lot of fast money made and spent every single day - far beyond what a “condo administration” with “housing purpose” can afford.

Seasteading on ship technology was imagined described and published two centuries ago - if it did not happen it is because there are fundamental reasons why it can not happen this way.

The reasons are in the realm of financial feasibility and the short lifespan of welded plating at sea, making it "utterly unfit" as foundation for a permanent floating city.

To make it happen a technology leap is necessary advanced cement composite technology is this technology leap.

It has been predicted that construction activities in our century will be DOMINATED by concrete sea structures
